Sam and Susan Simon Commit Retirement Assets for HUC-JIR's Future

Sam and Susan Simon

Sam and Susan Simon have always believed that meaningful Jewish leadership opportunities shape one's legacy—from their initial connection at BBYO to being the first couple to have each served as president of their synagogue. That's why they are investing in building progressive Judaism by naming HUC-JIR as a beneficiary of Sam's retirement fund.

Active members of Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church, Virginia, since 1973, the Simons have enjoyed decades-long friendships with founding Rabbi Laszlo Berkowits and adjunct Rabbi Richard S. Sternberger ('52). Those relationships sparked a passion for L'Dor Va'Dor that fuels their lives.

Looking to expand his leadership in the Jewish community, Laszlo and Richard encouraged Sam to become involved with HUC-JIR. Over the last 14 years he has embraced meaningful roles on the Board of Advisors and Advisory Committee of Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music, but his time on the Admissions Committee has had the most profound impact on his life. "If you want to build Jewish lives," he says, "you need a strong Jewish clergy, professional system, and seminary like HUC-JIR."

It was only fitting Sam and Susan sponsored a rabbinical student for their first gift to the College-Institute.

The Simons hope that their planned gift to the Rabbis Richard S. Sternberger and Laszlo Berkowits Endowed Scholarship Fund will help educate Jewish professionals to create that same energy that inspired their path.

The College-Institute community is grateful to the Simons for their deep and continued generosity. To learn more about including HUC-JIR in your estate plan, please contact us.
