A Legacy of Giving Back: Richard and Joanne Krantz

Richard and Joanne Krantz

Richard Krantz’s connection to Hebrew Union College runs deeper than most. Accepted to the rabbinical school after college, he ultimately chose law, earning his J.D. from Harvard, but his bond with the institution never wavered. “This is my way of giving back,” he says.

Today, as a partner at CM Law, a former member of Hebrew Union College’s Board of Governors, and current member of North American Board of Advisors, Richard remains one of the College’s most devoted champions.

Since 2006, Richard and his wife Joanne—a University of Chicago MBA and former financial analyst—have supported Hebrew Union College in meaningful ways. Together they established the Richard and Joanne Krantz Endowed Scholarship Fund, providing critical support for rabbinical and cantorial students at the New York campus. Their generosity has also supported the Annual Fund, COVID Renewal Fund, and Panken Professorships.

Now Richard and Joanne have deepened their legacy commitment by using their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and other assets to establish a charitable remainder trust (CRT) for the benefit of the College. The CRT provides lifetime income and tax benefits, with the remainder ultimately supporting the Hebrew Union College endowment. For Richard, the motivation is clear: “What would the Reform movement look like without rabbis, without cantors, without educators? It doesn’t work.”

Hebrew Union College is grateful for Richard and Joanne’s unwavering commitment to its mission and the future of Jewish life. To explore legacy giving opportunities of your own, contact Anat Becker, National Director of Legacy Giving, at abecker@huc.edu or (212) 824-2228.
