A Legacy of Love and Leadership: Morris Kramer, z”l

Morris Kramer, z”l, was deeply committed to the future of Jewish life—and he saw Hebrew Union College as essential to that future.

For 25 years, he served on our Board of Advisors, supporting our mission to train rabbis, cantors, educators, and scholars who carry Jewish tradition forward with wisdom, compassion, and purpose. He especially loved our cantorial students—attending weekly practicums and recitals, getting to know each student, and following their journeys long after ordination.

As Rabbi David Adelson observed in his stirring eulogy, Morris was “a Jew’s Jew”—equally at home in Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and post-denominational settings. He belonged to more synagogues than most people can name, and he found beauty in any service where Jewish prayer was heartfelt and meaningful. During the pandemic, he reveled in streaming multiple Shabbat services each weekend. He didn’t just support Jewish life—he delighted in it.

Morris gave generously during his lifetime, and his legacy gift ensures that future generations of Jewish leaders continue to be nurtured and supported at HUC. His memory will live on through the students that have benefited and will benefit from his generosity—in the sermons they deliver, the lessons they teach, the prayer they lead, and the healing they bring.

To follow Morris’s example—and to help shape Jewish life for generations—please consider including Hebrew Union College in your estate plan. Together, we can ensure an enduring legacy that has exponential impact on the future of Jewish worship and community.
